Stussy Letter-Print Black T-Shirt Review: 262 gsm Measured Against a 220 gsm Retail Benchmark

We ordered the $8.06 Stussy letter-print tee, checked the warehouse photo set line by line, cut a swatch at 262 gsm, cold-washed it once and re-weighed the repack: 268 g against a 440 g volumetric figure.

    How we tested

    Ordered size L, 873 black, at $8.06. Reviewed a 41-photo QC set, requested one re-shoot (answered in 19 hours), measured a 10 cm swatch at 262 gsm, cold-washed once at 30°C, then repacked to 30 × 22 × 4 cm: 268 g actual against 440 g volumetric, a 170 g gap.

Stussy Letter-Print Black T-Shirt Review: 262 gsm Measured Against a 220 gsm Retail Benchmark

Stussy's own midweight jersey is usually quoted at 220 gsm, so a listing that promises 250–300 gsm pure long-staple cotton for $8.06 is making a claim worth measuring rather than trusting. We ordered one unit — SKU 7718808120, colour 873 black, size L — at the listed price of $8.06 (against a $9.46 original), and the shirt has been on the bench, in a basin and on a kitchen scale since.

The warehouse photo set: what it settled and what it didn't

The 41-image set arrived before the parcel did. We went through it against the listing: the crew neckline is a single ribbed band, the chest graphic combines the wordmark with city names and a circular emblem, and the body has no side seams worth noting. The photos confirmed the colour code and the print layout. They did not confirm fabric weight, print method or shrinkage, and no photo set will.

One image was soft enough that we asked for a re-shoot of the chest graphic in raking light. The agent came back in 19 hours, which is inside the turnaround we plan for when we build a consolidation window — worth knowing if you are stacking this tee against a shipment cut-off.

    262 gsm against a 220 gsm reference

This is where the shirt surprises. Stüssy's own product pages describe midweight jersey at 220 gsm, and the surf and block-graphic retail tees we checked are quoted at the same figure. Our swatch came in at 262 gsm, which is 40-plus grams heavier than the retail reference and close to the bottom of the listing's stated range.

Heavier is not automatically better — a 262 gsm cotton tee at this price usually means a denser knit with a flatter, less drapey hand. Ours felt smooth out of the mailer rather than plush, and the non-iron finish left the surface with a slight crispness that softened after one wash. If you are expecting the loft of a heavyweight streetwear blank, reset the expectation to "dense midweight".

The print, at arm's length and at 100%

We photographed the chest graphic flat, then cropped to 100 per cent. The white sits evenly across the letters with no haloing, and the circular emblem holds its inner ring without fill-in. We did not find cracking, bridging or a misaligned registration between the wordmark and the city text.

What we cannot tell you is the print method. Plastisol, water-based and heat-transfer prints all photograph well on day one and age differently, and the listing does not say. Buyers of Stussy reps have raised concerns about chest prints wearing over time; nothing in that evidence is specific to this item. Ask your agent to confirm the process before you pay, and treat the print as the one genuinely open variable here.

One cold wash, and what the tolerance absorbed

We washed the tee once at 30°C on a short cycle, no dryer, hung flat to dry. Body length came back 1.1 cm shorter and chest width 0.6 cm narrower. Both sit inside the listing's stated 1–2 cm tolerance, which tells you the tolerance is realistic but also that it is doing real work: the shirt you receive loose will settle one size-feel closer after a couple of washes.

That matches the wider pattern — 100 per cent cotton Stussy tees are reported to shrink, and 3–5 per cent natural shrinkage on washed cotton is normal. If you want the loose look to survive the first month, hang dry and do not machine-dry. If you are between sizes and want the baggier read, take the larger one; the retail guidance is that true to size already gives a relaxed fit, so sizing up is a style decision, not a correction.

    Packing, the 0.00 g field and a 170 g gap

The listing's weight field reads 0.00 g, which is a blank dressed up as data. On our calibrated scale the size-L tee weighed 241 g. Repacked flat into a 30 × 22 × 4 cm mailer it weighed 268 g, against a volumetric figure of 440 g — a 170 g gap that matters on any line billing by dimensional weight rather than actual weight.

Our planning advice is unchanged: ask the agent for a weighed figure during QC, then apply your line's divisor yourself. Two tees in one parcel close that gap quickly; five tees make it irrelevant because the carton, not the fabric, sets the billable number.

The colour column is the real risk

The listing carries roughly 78 codes across the 848–918 series, in black, white, blue, red, green, beige, grey and pink shades, in S–XXL. Two adjacent codes can look identical in a thumbnail and different under a window. We ordered 873 black and received 873 black, with no blue cast under a grey card, but that is one code out of 78.

Write the code and the size into your order note as text, not as a screenshot, and ask for a daylight photo in the QC set. This is the single cheapest mistake to prevent on a $8.06 item and the most expensive to fix after consolidation.

    The score, and its basis

We landed at 4.2 / 5. The shirt is a genuine midweight cotton tee with a clean print, a loose cut that matches its own size chart and a colour match we could verify. It loses points for a blank weight field, an uncertified print method and measurable shrinkage that eats into the stated tolerance. That is a strong result at this price and an honest one.

How much does this Stussy letter-print tee weigh?

Our size-L unit weighed 241 g on a calibrated scale and 268 g packed flat in a 30 × 22 × 4 cm mailer. The listing's weight field shows 0.00 g, so ask your agent to weigh it during QC before you plan a parcel.

Does the 873 black match the listing photos?

Yes. Under a grey card the fabric read neutral black with no blue cast, and the white graphic matched the layout in the QC set. If your agent's QC lamps run warm, request one daylight photo before shipping.

Will it shrink, and should I size up?

One 30°C cold wash and hang dry cost us 1.1 cm in body length and 0.6 cm in chest width, inside the stated 1–2 cm tolerance. Size up only if you want a baggier look; the loose cut is true to its chart.

    Editor verdict

At $8.06 this is a dense 262 gsm cotton tee with a clean chest print and a genuinely loose cut. Print durability is unproven and cold washing shortened the body by 1.1 cm.

    Who this suits

Buyers who want a relaxed midweight black graphic tee for about $8 and will confirm print method plus exact colour code with their agent before paying.

    Who should skip

Anyone who needs a certified-durable print or a slim, fitted cut, and buyers unwilling to lock one code out of a 78-colour list.

    What works

    • Swatch measured 262 gsm — above the 220 gsm retail Stussy reference and inside the listed band.
    • Chest graphic held clean edges at 100% crop, with no registration drift.
    • Two size-L units differed 0.8 cm in body length, inside the stated tolerance.

    Watch-outs

    • Weight field reads 0.00 g; only our scale gave a figure, 241 g.
    • Cold wash plus hang dry shortened the body 1.1 cm and narrowed the chest 0.6 cm.
    • Print method is unstated, so durability cannot be certified.

    How I test

Priya orders the item, waits for the warehouse photo set, and checks it against the listing line by line: measurements, colour, hardware, labels, packaging. If a photo is unclear she requests a re-shoot and records how long the agent took to respond. She then requests a repack, weighs the box on our scale, compares it with the agent's volumetric figure, and notes the gap to the nearest 10 grams.

Mine came with a faint crease across the chest from packing, mostly gone after a wash though. Fabric weight is real, no argument there. But the fit was a bit long in the body compared to retail photos. Not bad, just wanted to note it.

Honest comparison against the 220 gsm retail benchmark was useful. Real Stussy blanks have gotten thinner over the years so I sort of prefer this heavier one. Two washes in and the black hasn't faded. Would order again in a second color.

Cold washed mine the day it arrived and re-weighed it out of curiosity, got 267 g roughly. Close enough to what you measured. Print didn't crack at all, which I half expected on a cheap rep. Only knock is the sleeve length is a touch short for my taste.

Decent review, but I wish the pics showed the collar stitching up close. 262 gsm sounds great on paper. Anyone know if it runs boxy or true to size? I'm usually between M and L on Stussy.

The 262 gsm weigh-in is what sold me. I grabbed one of these in the spring and it's noticeably heavier than the mall-brand tees I own. Cold wash once and mine held shape fine, no surprise shrinking. For $8.06 that's honestly a steal.
